FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Four topics cover most of it

Accounts and deposits, borrowing, digital banking, and joining the credit union.

Accounts and deposits

Checking, savings, and the money in them

Is there a monthly fee on checking?

No. None of our personal checking accounts carry a monthly service fee, and there is no minimum balance to avoid one. We are owned by our members, so a fee for holding your own money never made sense to us.

How much does high-yield savings pay?

4.15% APY on balances in the high-yield savings account, with no tiers and no promotional expiration date. Interest is calculated daily and credited monthly, and you can move money in and out whenever you want.

When will my deposit be available?

Cash and direct deposits post the same business day. Checks generally clear the next business day up to $275, with the balance on the second business day. Larger or unusual checks can take longer and we tell you at deposit.

Can I get direct deposit two days early?

Yes. We post payroll and government direct deposits as soon as the employer files them, which is often two days ahead of the stated pay date. You do not sign up for anything; it is automatic on every checking account.

What happens if I overdraw?

If you have overdraft transfer set up we pull from savings for free. Without it, the item may be paid or returned and a fee applies; the full amount is listed on the fee schedule. Turning on a low-balance alert prevents most of these.

Loans and credit

Borrowing from a credit union

What rate will I get on a car loan?

New autos start at 4.09% APR for up to 72 months for qualified members. Your rate depends on credit history, term, and whether the vehicle is new or used. A preapproval takes minutes and holds your rate for 30 days.

How long does a mortgage take?

Most Summit purchase mortgages close in 30 to 38 days from a complete application. The appraisal and your responsiveness on documents drive the timeline more than anything we control. Our 30-year fixed is currently 6.375%.

Should I use a HELOC or a personal loan?

A home equity line at 6.625% is cheaper but takes several weeks and puts your house behind the debt. A personal loan from 8.99% APR funds in days with nothing pledged. For anything under about $15,000, most members pick the personal loan.

Does applying hurt my credit score?

A full application creates one hard inquiry, typically a few points that recover within months. Rate shopping for an auto or mortgage inside a 14-day window counts as a single inquiry across all lenders.

Can I combine my credit card balances?

Yes, through a debt consolidation loan at 10.49% APR with a fixed term. Run it through the consolidation calculator first, because stretching a short balance over five years can raise total cost even at a lower rate.

I was declined. What now?

You get a written notice listing the specific reasons within 30 days. Bring it to any branch and a lender will tell you what to fix and roughly how long it takes. Many members are approved on a second try within six months.

Digital banking

The app, the website, and payments

How do I reset my password?

Use the reset link on the sign-in screen and confirm with your two-factor method. If you have lost access to that method too, call (800) 555-0148 and we verify you a different way. We cannot read or reset it from a chat message.

Is there a limit on mobile deposit?

$5,000 per day and $15,000 per rolling 30 days for accounts open more than 90 days. Newer accounts start lower and step up automatically. Endorse the back, write "for mobile deposit at Summit FCU," and keep the check for 14 days.

Can I send money to another person?

Yes, by external transfer to an account you own, or by the person-to-person feature inside the app using a phone number or email. Payments to people are effectively irreversible, so only send to someone you know.

Why did the app sign me out?

Sessions end after ten minutes of inactivity, and always when you switch away for a long stretch. It is deliberate. Turn on biometric sign-in so getting back in takes a second rather than a full password entry.

Does bill pay cost anything?

No. Electronic payments and mailed paper checks through bill pay are both free. Schedule electronic payees five business days ahead and mailed checks seven, and set the date to the day the biller needs it, not your due date.

Membership

Joining and being an owner

Who can join Summit?

Anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in our service area, plus family members of anyone already in. If you are not sure, ask. We have found a path for nearly everyone who has called about it.

What does it cost to join?

A $5 opening deposit into a share savings account. That $5 is your ownership stake, it stays yours, and it comes back if you ever close the account. There is no application fee and no annual membership charge.

What does member-owned actually change?

Earnings come back as better rates, fewer fees, and free services instead of going to outside shareholders. It also means one member, one vote for the board, no matter how large your balance is.

Is my money as safe as it would be at a bank?

Yes. Deposits are federally insured by the NCUA to at least $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category, which is the same coverage level banks carry through the FDIC. Summit holds $14.2B in assets and has operated since 1948.

How long does it take to open an account?

About ten minutes online with a government ID, your Social Security number, and a funding source. In a branch it takes a little longer because we set up your card and digital banking while you are sitting there.

Rates and figures current as of July 2026 and subject to change. Membership eligibility required. This is a demonstration website; rates, products, and figures shown are illustrative only. Federally insured by NCUA. Equal Housing Opportunity Lender.

Still stuck on something?

Send a secure message or call and a person picks up, usually in under two minutes.
