Used vehicles

Used auto

We split used into two age bands. Older collateral costs a little more because it depreciates faster than the loan pays down.

Refinance and private party

Two situations dealers do not cover

Moving a loan you already have, or buying a car from a neighbor instead of a lot.

Auto refinance from another lender

If your current loan came from a dealer finance arm, there is a reasonable chance it carries a markup. We pay off the old lender, take over the title, and you keep driving the same car.

Private party purchase

Buying from an individual means no dealer handles the paperwork, so we do. We verify the title is clean, cut the draft, and file the lien for you.

Reading the table

What moves your number off the headline rate

The rates above are the floor. Three things decide whether you land on it.

Credit history

Members in our top tier get the published rate. Each tier below adds roughly half a point, and we tell you which tier you landed in.

Loan to value

Financing more than the car is worth pushes the rate up. A down payment of ten percent usually keeps you at the published tier.

Term length

On used and private party loans, every extra year of term adds to the rate. New auto is the exception and holds at 4.09% through 72 months.

Common questions

How long is a rate quote good for?

Sixty days from the date of approval. If rates drop while you are still shopping, we apply the lower one automatically at closing.

Does checking my rate hurt my credit?

No. Pre-qualification uses a soft inquiry that only you can see. A hard pull happens later, and only after you tell us to move forward.

Is there a prepayment penalty?

There is not, on any Summit auto loan. Interest is simple and calculated daily, so paying extra shortens the loan and cuts what you owe in interest.

Can I refinance a loan I just took out at the dealer?

Yes, and it is the most common refinance we do. Wait until the title has been issued to the original lender, usually three to six weeks, then apply.

What is the smallest loan you write?

$2,500. Below that a personal loan is usually the better tool because there is no title work or insurance requirement.

Do I have to be a member first?

You can apply first and join at closing. A $5 opening deposit makes you a member and part owner of the credit union.
